Ben Lomond is a majestic mountain rising prominently behind Queenstown, New Zealand, standing at an impressive 1,748 metres. It embodies the spirit of alpine adventure, offering a rugged yet rewarding character for those who seek to explore its slopes. The atmosphere on its trails is one of invigorating challenge and tranquil natural beauty, as hikers ascend through varied terrain. Its unparalleled setting, easily accessible from the bustling town centre, truly makes it stand out for visitors desiring breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Southern Alps.

Hiking the Ben Lomond Track is the primary highlight, considered one of Queenstown's most significant day hikes. The demanding ascent takes you through charming Douglas fir forests before transitioning into open alpine tussock and shrubs. From the summit, visitors are rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views encompassing the azure waters of Lake Whakatipu, the dramatic crags of The Remarkables, and the distant peaks of Cecil and Walter. A popular option involves taking the Skyline Gondola part-way up to Bob's Peak, shortening the initial forest climb.

It works exceptionally well for visitors who appreciate the satisfaction of earning magnificent views through physical exertion. The overall appeal lies in the profound sense of accomplishment and the unforgettable, expansive natural beauty observed from a truly elevated perspective, offering some of the finest mountain scenery in the South Island.

A hard slog but 100% worth it for the view at the summit. I made it easier on myself by starting off from the top of the gondola but the boys did it from the base while I took their backpacks up with me.

Incredible Hike – A Must-Do in New Zealand!

This was the most beautiful hike we did in New Zealand! We also did the Tongariro Crossing, but unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great, so we couldn’t see much.

We started from the Gondola, and we highly recommend doing the same—it’s a great way to combine the Gondola ride with the hike.

The hike is easy up to Ben Lomond Saddle, where you already get a stunning view. However, from there, the trail becomes much steeper for the final 1km to the summit. The track is not maintained, but still in good condition. That said, we wouldn’t recommend it for first-time hikers, as it requires some experience and fitness.

Reaching the summit is absolutely worth it—the views are incredibly stunning! One of the best hikes in New Zealand!

I took this walk from the gondola station. This is a gentle yet quite mentally challenging walk as it is essentially a never-ending climb. However, the view from the summit is unmatched, with each direction providing an unique vibe of landscape. Actually, the scene becomes rather astonishing once you reach the saddle. Also, there are goats on trials for those wildlife lovers.

A tough climb and scramble over loose rocks and wet mud. I went in early spring and there was some ice and snow near the summit which made it a bit tougher but the view was 1000% worth it. 360 panoramic view of the surrounding areas. If you're up for a challenge and have the right footwear I cannot recommend this hike enough! Do it!

Amazing hike, a must do if your anywhere near Queenstown! We were lucky enough to have it snow in the middle of summer which made it all the more spectacular! If you want the hike to be a little easier take the gondola to the start of the hike rather then walking up it for the first hour.

Watch out for the mischievous keas at the top, they will break into your bag! Very cute though.
