Details

Ben Lomond Saddle is a significant point on the renowned Ben Lomond Track in Queenstown, New Zealand, standing at an elevation of 1,326 metres. This exposed alpine saddle offers a rugged yet immensely atmospheric setting, surrounded by alpine tussock and shrubs, providing an authentic high-country experience. Its elevated position above Queenstown makes it a standout destination for visitors seeking expansive, breathtaking views of the Wakatipu Basin, Lake Wakatipu, and the majestic peaks of the Southern Alps.

Reaching the saddle involves a demanding climb, typically taking a few hours from Bob's Peak, which is accessible by the Skyline Gondola or other trails. The well-kept path transitions from forested areas to an open sub-alpine environment, rewarding hikers with increasingly dramatic vistas. A solitary wooden bench at the saddle provides a welcome spot for respite, allowing visitors to absorb the panoramic scenery that extends to include the Remarkables and, on clear days, parts of Mount Aspiring National Park.

This destination is particularly well-suited for experienced walkers and those with a good level of fitness desiring a rewarding half-day or full-day hiking adventure. It appeals greatly to individuals who value challenging treks that culminate in stunning natural beauty, offering a quintessential Queenstown experience for those not wishing to proceed to the more arduous summit. The overall appeal lies in its unforgettable 360-degree views and a profound sense of achievement amidst New Zealand's dramatic landscape.

This was a very good hike! We took the Gondala up because of laziness reasons. The hike was somewhat steep and long but the scenery was varied (spooky forest!) and the views were great. Don't be dumb and walk down any of the biking trails, they're not for legs.

After the cable car upper station, Ben Lomond Trail starts. I liked it better than Tiki Trail, as it was more scenic. Unfortunately, I did not get a good view at the Saddle, due to snowy weather.

Tiki Trail starts at the cemetery.

Great spot to just sit and admire the mountains. It feels so remote. Lovely view. Track is quite hard to follow but was so worth it. Quite snowy in winter and very icy

Beautiful, gorgeous, wonderful, amazing view at the top.. We started at the Tiki trail going up to the Saddle then took the gondola going down, which cuts 2km, total hike is 11km, 1300 elevation to the saddle. It’s a busy track even on autumn season, steep but definitely rewarding views.. Bring enough water or electrolytes and energy bars to keep you going. Definitely will do this hike again.

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. It is so worth the climb up there. This was our favorite hike in New Zealand. It is a long slog, especially if you start from the Tiki Trail like we did. We started an hour before sunrise and highly recommend doing that. The goal is to get as far as you can before the gondola starts. We went up to just about the peak. The winds made things a bit too sketchy for us to summit all the way up. There is a bathroom here.
