Details

Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge is a historic structure spanning the stunning Kawarau River in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. Completed in late 1880, this impressive bridge was an engineering marvel for its time, designed to withstand the challenging canyon winds of the sheer, rocky gorge. Its enduring design, featuring innovative strengthening solutions like inward-sloping cables, earned its engineer, Harry Higginson, a prestigious global award. Today, it stands as a testament to pioneering spirit, set against a backdrop of dramatic schist rock walls and the vivid turquoise waters of the river below, creating an atmosphere that blends historical significance with breathtaking natural beauty. It particularly stands out as the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping, making it an iconic destination for both history enthusiasts and thrill-seekers.

Visitors to the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge can experience it in various engaging ways. The most famous activity is the world's first commercial bungy jump, where participants leap 43 metres (141 ft) towards the Kawarau River below. Spectators can watch the exhilarating jumps from dedicated viewing platforms, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and the dramatic expressions of those taking the plunge. The bridge also forms part of the popular Queenstown Trail, offering walkers, runners, and cyclists a scenic route that winds high above the river through a premier wine-growing region. Additionally, the site provides historical insights into the bridge's construction and its evolution into an adventure tourism hub through its visitor centre.

This remarkable destination is ideal for a diverse range of visitors, from those seeking high-octane adventure to individuals who appreciate historical engineering and stunning landscapes. It works exceptionally well for groups where some members wish to bungy jump while others prefer to observe, thanks to the excellent viewing facilities. Nature lovers and keen photographers will be captivated by the spectacular gorge, the vibrant turquoise river, and the picturesque setting, perfect for leisurely strolls and memorable shots. Overall, the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge offers a unique blend of heritage, adrenaline, and natural beauty, making it a compelling stop on any Queenstown itinerary, whether for a half-day trip or as part of a longer exploration of the region's trails and wineries.

I honestly just stopped for the breathtaking views, it was windy and cold but that didn't stop us having a look around and taking it all in. I also witnessed people bungee jumping and ziplining, cool for those thrill seekers and adrenalin junkies. ☺️

Visited on a Thursday afternoon unfortunately we didn't catch any bungy jumpers but the view is very nice. Have an accessible parking. Very old and historic bridge
