RealNZ | TSS Earnslaw Lake Cruises presents a unique journey aboard a historic coal-fired steamship, affectionately known as the "Lady of the Lake", which has been traversing Lake Wakatipu since 1912. This Edwardian vessel offers an authentic step back in time, serving as the only hand-fired, commercial passenger-carrying steamship still operating in the Southern Hemisphere. Its distinctive character and nostalgic atmosphere are complemented by the stunning alpine setting, providing breathtaking panoramas of the Remarkables mountain range and Cecil Peak as it departs from Queenstown.

During the leisurely 90-minute return cruise, visitors are invited to explore the ship's decks and peer into the fascinating engine room, where the giant steam engines are visible in operation, a particular highlight for many. The onboard Promenade Café and licensed bar provide refreshments, while a mini-museum showcases historical displays. The journey often includes live piano music, enhancing the vintage ambiance, and can be combined with a visit to Walter Peak High Country Farm, where guests can enjoy gourmet BBQ dining, engaging farm tours, or an eco-experience.

This iconic cruise is ideally suited for first-time Queenstown visitors, particularly those who appreciate lake scenery, heritage travel, and activities that do not demand an entire day. It proves a wonderful choice for families with children, grandparents, and travellers seeking a relaxing alternative to Queenstown's more adrenaline-focused pursuits. The overall appeal lies in its blend of scenic beauty, a genuine historical experience, and the tranquil escape it offers across the pristine waters of Lake Wakatipu.

Oh gosh, what a fantastic experience! Everything exceeded our expectations.

The staff were all friendly, but I would especially like to thank Minji. She was absolutely wonderful and, unfortunately, the first staff member we met in New Zealand who genuinely greeted us with such warmth and enthusiasm. We had a disappointing experience earlier at Skyline, but Minji completely turned our day around with her kindness and excellent customer service. Thank you so much!

The food was delicious—far better than we expected—and the sheepdog show, although quite short, was entertaining and well worth watching.

Thank you again for such a memorable experience. We will definitely recommend your company to our family when they visit New Zealand next year!

This was a fantastic experience. We booked our tickets ahead of time on a website. We picked up a ticket from the store front by the water. We walked right on to the boat and found a table to sit at. The views were AMAZING. The staff was nice. The steam parts were so cool to see. Plenty of space on the boat to move around.

This was an excellent experience. During the trip over to Walter's Peak farm we had some good commentary given on the boat.

Dinner was excellent, with a huge variety of barbecue meats. Not really for a vegetarian though, with the exception of grilled vegetables. But I am not a vegetarian, so all good for me.

It was my birthday, and this is why I booked this experience. Somehow, they new it was my birthday and had added a little "happy birthday to moo" to my table, lol. Then, at the end of dinner, the staff came out singing happy birthday to me and little cakes on a plate with a candle lol. Fun.

The farm show was cute and adorable.

Thank you RealNZ.

A great experience overall aboard the TSS Earnslaw. The old steamship has so much character and history, and it was fascinating reading about the ship while cruising across the lake. There’s a real sense of charm the moment you step onboard.

The atmosphere was relaxed and the onboard facilities catered well to everyone. We went on the afternoon cruise and found it much less crowded, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Whether you’re taking in the views from the front deck, relaxing along the sides, or watching the crew work the incredible engines below, every angle offers something special. The scenery across the lake is absolutely breathtaking.

We also did the farm experience and afternoon tea, which was a highlight for our 3-year-old. Feeding the animals, watching the farm show, and wandering around the property made for a really fun and interactive afternoon. The staff were friendly and the whole experience felt easy, welcoming, and family-friendly.

Overall, a really enjoyable outing and a fun family experience that we’d definitely recommend when visiting Queenstown.

My wife and I went on the morning cruise on Wednesday 25/2/2026. After considering the options, our preference was for the Walter Peak farm tour. It's a slow and calm trip over to the Walter Peak set-up. We then disembarked and, after morning tea, went on tour of the farm. Not many animals, but it was fun and you can feed most of them (with their free food). After the farm tour, we saw a sheep (lamb) shearing display which was good. The morning tea was excellent, great food and drink and great service. The farm tour was great, can't remember his name but the young Englishman (I hope) was friendly and chatty. Unfortunately, the shearing display started a bit late (we were waiting for about 10 minutes) and we had hoped to revisit some of the animals but ran out of time to do that. The trip back to Queenstown onboard the Earnslaw very relaxing (some people dozed off). The staff onboard the boat were all wonderful. Highly recommended activity in Queenstown. Our accommodation had view of the lake and we loved to see the Earnslaw out on the lake.
