Details

Arrowtown Chinese Settlement is a compelling partially restored historic village on the banks of Bush Creek, near Queenstown, New Zealand, offering a poignant tribute to the Chinese gold miners and business people who contributed to the region's rich gold mining and cultural history. This Tohu Whenua heritage site provides a unique opportunity to step back into the 'golden' era, allowing visitors to experience the character of the modest and often challenging living conditions of these early settlers. Its peaceful setting, tucked amongst willows, poplars, and hawthorns, creates a distinct atmosphere that stands in stark contrast to the nearby bustling Arrowtown, inviting a moment of reflection on a significant, yet sometimes overlooked, chapter of New Zealand's past.

Visitors can explore several restored huts, offering a tangible glimpse into the small dwellings and harsh realities of life for Chinese miners during the Otago gold rush. A prominent feature is Ah Lum's Store, a meticulously conserved building that served as a busy store, bank/office, and home, and was a central hub for the Chinese community. Extensive interpretation panels, presented in both English and Chinese, detail the stories of the miners, outlining their challenges, rewards, and everyday existence within the settlement. The main trail through the settlement is also suitable for wheelchairs and buggies, ensuring broad accessibility.

This historic site particularly appeals to those interested in New Zealand's multicultural heritage and the human stories behind the gold rush. It is well-suited for families seeking an educational outing, history enthusiasts, or anyone desiring a reflective experience that offers a deeper understanding of the isolated lives of Chinese immigrants. The Arrowtown Chinese Settlement provides an immersive and enriching visit, serving as a powerful and significant reminder of the resilience and contributions of its former inhabitants.

The structure have been incredibly well managed to be in such good condition considering their age. I enjoyed the walk through layout - despite the rain on the day I visited

It's a nicely documented part of local history, quite moving to physically experience the tight quarters and existence they literally carved out of stone, honestly depicted on the sign guides, right next to the "upscale" existence the NZ folks lived in the "white" part of town. Tribute to an amazing group of people. 有中文解釋, 值得看。 Definitely worth a stop in beautiful Arrowtown.

Just stop here on our tour. A nice place to walk around for 60 minutes. Several stops to show you about the history of Arrowtown.

A nice river that you can take an easy stroll. Very quiet and peaceful. A great place to stretch your legs.

Inside of the town you can chooset several places to eat.

All it's worth a a 60-minute stop just to get out of your car, relax, stretch your legs and take some of this trust from driving on the road.

Definitely a cool place to visit. An easy walk from the main part of town. Pretty disgusting the racism back then but I am glad it isn’t washed over like it never happened.
